Blog, disappointment guaranteed

Tools

Here you will find interactive film tools I created, designed to critique industry standards and question the illusions of independent cinema. I invite you to explore, reflect on the results, and challenge them.

Festival Predictor

A checklist tool to calculate a film’s festival selection probability.

The Concrete Realities Guaranteeing Your Spot:

This scorecard was created using the Festival Selection Predictor on miracatabey.com.

Censorship Test

A psychological checklist to test your level of self-censorshipas a filmmaker.

The Truth Behind Your Beliefs:

This scorecard was created using the Self-Censorship Test on miracatabey.com.

Indie Scale

A scale that measures a film’s independence by decoding its structural and financial DNA through public data.

1. Financing

2. Development Process

3. Crew & Post-Production

4. PR & Marketing Strategy

5. Distribution & Exhibition

This scorecard was created using the “Indie Scale” form on miracatabey.com.

Mirac Atabey’s Pearl Table

A film evaluation method that I used as a jury member. Instead of stars, this evaluation uses pearls. Because I believe the artistic value is not found in the sky where everyone can see it; it is in the depths.

I: Scaled Evaluation

Artistic Depth

At what depth does the film operate?

Artistic depth refers to the depth of a filmmaker’s perspective: the higher the number, the deeper the perspective.

II: Binary Evaluation

Black or White Issues

1. Audiovisual Choices

Does the film take risks with its audiovisual choices (not playing it safe) to contribute to cinematic evolution?

2. Audiovisual Identity

Does the film create a remix that reflects a distinctive identity, having a signature?

3. Mise en Scene

Does the film build a credible mise en scene where you believe the world it creates?

4. Approach to the Subject

Is the filmmaker sincere, avoiding issue-bait or trend exploitation?

This scorecard was created using the Mirac Atabey’s Pearl Table tool on miracatabey.com.
